Renown Consult Limited, in partnership with the Defence Intelligence College (DIC), has launched a new Counter-Ambush Intelligence and Movement Security Course, aimed at strengthening the ability of military and security personnel to detect, disrupt, and respond to ambush attacks on operational bases, convoys, patrol teams, and logistics movements.
The course brought together participants drawn from the armed forces as well as other intelligence and security agencies, and is designed to build practical skills in intelligence-led threat detection, route analysis, convoy protection, and coordinated tactical response.
Ambushes Identified as a Growing Threat
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Lieutenant General Emmanuel Undiandeye — represented by the Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence, Air Vice Marshal Bala Rabiu Mamman — underscored the central role intelligence plays in national security, noting that it allows troops to anticipate threats, make informed decisions, and safeguard national interests.
The CDI pointed to Nigeria’s increasingly complex security landscape, shaped by insurgency, banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and organised criminal networks that are growing more coordinated and adaptive in exploiting terrain, technology, and local vulnerabilities. Among these threats, he singled out ambushes as especially dangerous, describing them as a tactic capable of inflicting severe damage while minimising the attacker’s exposure.
He noted that the rising number of ambush incidents affecting bases, convoys, and logistics operations is a serious concern, with such attacks typically well-planned and designed to exploit intelligence shortfalls, predictable movement patterns, and coordination gaps.
Course Objectives: Prevention, Coordination, Resilience
According to the CDI, the course’s strategic value lies in its focus on proactive intelligence gathering, stronger inter-agency collaboration, and improved capacity for personnel to perform effectively under pressure — all critical capabilities in today’s fast-changing security environment.
He urged participants to see the training as more than a personal development opportunity, describing them as “force multipliers” expected to apply what they learn to improve operational outcomes within their respective organisations. He also called on them to engage with discipline and openness, share experiences, and challenge assumptions, given that security threats continue to evolve and require equally adaptive responses.
Emphasis on Professionalism and Public Trust
The CDI further stressed the importance of professionalism, leadership, and ethical conduct throughout and beyond the course, noting that public trust remains one of the most valuable assets of the security institutions involved. He called on participants to uphold integrity, accountability, and respect for the rule of law in their conduct.
He commended the Commandant of the Defence Intelligence College, Commodore Usman Bugaje, along with the organisers, for what he described as a laudable initiative, and expressed confidence in the course’s potential to strengthen national security outcomes. He closed by charging participants to make the most of the opportunity and remain committed to the collective mission of protecting the nation.
